Section 174 Capitalization and Tax Consequences

Historically, Section 174 of the Internal Revenue Code allowed taxpayers to deduct research and experimentation (R&E) expenses in the year incurred.  However, The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) made a significant change to this section effective January 1, 2022, eliminating the ability to currently deduct R&E expenses, instead taxpayers must now capitalize and amortize these costs. 

We will talk about the code, changes and how it affects the taxpayers for 2022 and future. If you have a client that may be affected by these changes, you will walk away armed with information they may need to know.
